NSW: A good drop of red need only cost about $10

A test by wine experts shows a good drop of red for Christmas need only cost around $10.

For its annual wine test, consumer magazine CHOICE picked 64 top-selling bottled redwine blends, based primarily on cabernet sauvignon, shiraz or merlot grapes.

CHOICE says almost half the wines cost less than $10 and only two cost more than $20.

In a blind tasting, five wine experts -- made up of winemakers, consultants and retailers-- identified quite a few good drops selling for around $10 or less.

Half the wines tested received scores equivalent to a bronze or silver medal at a wine show.

CHOICE has listed the top red wine as Leasingham's Bastion Clare Valley Shiraz CabernetSauvignon 2000, costing $12.70 a bottle.
