WA: WA classifies SARS dangerous infectious disease

PERTH, April 23 AAP - From tomorrow SARS will be classified as a dangerous, infectiousdisease in Western Australia, the state government said today.

The classification gives health authorities wide ranging powers to deal with suspectedcases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.

These include isolating people suspected of having the potentially life threateningdisease and those who have come in contact with them and ordering the testing of peoplesuspected of having SARS, Health Minister Bob Kucera said.

"... from tomorrow, SARS will be officially declared both an `infectious disease' and`dangerous infectious disease' under the Health Act," Mr Kucera said in a statement.

Around 100 beds have been set aside at Perth's Shenton Park rehabilitation facility,an annexe of the Royal Perth Hospital, in the event of a SARS outbreak in WA.
