They're strong, invincible: Amazon women on film

In classical mythology, they were called Amazons.

In these times, they have names like Sarah Connor or ClariceStarling or Warshawski or La Femme Nikita or Thelma and Louise orRipley. They're the warrior women of contemporary films, and theyhave arrived.

Why have they arrived in such great numbers? It may be just acase of better late than never. In action films, women - if theyappear at all - usually serve only to eroticize male-dominatedmovies. They're prostitutes or they're the girlfriends or wives ofthe film's male-bonding buddies.
