SUPPORTIVE HOUSING COMMUNITY TO BE DEDICATED APRIL 18

RALEIGH, N.

C., April 14 -- Wake County issued the following news release:

Wake County Human Services is partnering with local affordable housing developer DHIC, Inc., the City of Raleigh, and various financial supporters on Monday, April 18, 2011, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the dedication and grand opening of Brookridge Apartments, 3930 Durham Drive, Raleigh. Brookridge is a supportive housing community designed to serve formerly homeless and very low-income adults who are at risk of homelessness.

A number of elected officials will speak at the dedication, including Wake County Board of Commissioners Chair Paul Coble, Rep. Brad Miller, Rep. David Price and Raleigh Councilman Russ Stephenson. Betty Jo Shepheard will represent Sen. Richard Burr. Brookridge residents, as well as representatives from all project funders and partners will also be on hand. The apartment building and three occupied units will be open for touring.

Brookridge is modeled after DHIC's award-winning Lennox Chase Apartments - Raleigh and Wake County's first permanent supportive housing development that was completed in 2003.

"From Wake County's experience at Lennox Chase, we know that costs for housing, social services, substance abuse treatment and outpatient medical services decline when residents make the transition from an unstable environment to supportive housing," said Chairman Coble. "That's a significant long-term savings to our citizens, while supporting those in our community who need it most."

Wake County Human Services provides an on-site social worker at Lennox Chase to assist residents with a variety of needs, and a resident manager provides additional support and programming for residents. Similar supports will be in place at Brookridge.

The $5.4 million Brookridge complex offers 40 studio apartments for men and women earning 50 percent or less of the area median income. Monthly rents for the 500 square foot apartments range between $376 and $425, including utilities. Seven apartments are designed for people with physical disabilities.

Built to Energy Star standards, Brookridge is close to public transportation, shopping, services and employment opportunities in Southeast Raleigh. In addition to the apartments and supportive services, Brookridge features a community room and kitchen, a business center with free Internet access, a fitness center, a screened porch, television lounge, gazebo and other community spaces and amenities.
